The Dundee launch of
the Petition calling for an Independence Referendum took place
on Saturday 5 April 2008 in Verdant Works, Dundee. This
Petition has the full backing of First Minister, Alex Salmond
and was part of the next stage of the journey to Independence.
The Independence
Convention is an umbrella organisation which unites those of all
political persuasions, or none, who support the drive for
Scottish Independence.
The Petition calls
on "the Scottish Parliament to urge the Scottish Government to
conduct a referendum on whether Scotland should again become a
sovereign independent state." The wording reflects the
Convention's belief that the Referendum should be put in plain
and simple terms and welcomes the recently expressed support of
Sir Tom Farmer for this view.
Taking part in
Dundee, SNP President Ian Hudghton MEP commented:
"The Convention's
support in such a Referendum is clearly for Independence, but
their Petition is not about independence as such. It is about
democracy, openness and inclusion. We respect the ability of
the Scottish people to decide their own future. Our Petition
offers Scots - including those who disagree with us on the
Independence issue - the opportunity to choose. Obviously, I
would hope that Scots would choose to enjoy the benefits of
Independence."
Speakers included
Shona Robison MSP for Dundee East.
