SNP MEP Ian
Hudghton is backing European proposals that will make it easier for
cyclists and wheelchair users to use trains across the continent.
The European
Parliament is set to vote this week (Thursday) on a set of new laws
concerning Europe's railways and the SNP MEP is supporting plans to
provide cycle and wheelchair carriage facilities on trains across Europe
by 2012.
Speaking from
Strasbourg ahead of the vote, the SNP President said:
"If we are to
reduce traffic congestion then we need to offer realistic alternatives for
travellers. The railways are an essential public service and at present
the provision of facilities to carry bikes and wheelchairs can be patchy.
"My
parliamentary group has tabled an amendment to the proposals which would
require rail operators across Europe to introduce facilities to carry
bikes, wheelchairs and prams on all trains by 2012, or by 2008 for
international services.
"This would
be good news for the environment and would give a realistic alternative to
car travel for people who might find it difficult to use the trains at
present."
Commenting on
the prospects for Scottish tourism, Mr Hudghton added:
"The plans
for cycle carriage facilities could help boost tourism in Scotland where I
know many people enjoy taking cycling holidays around our beautiful
country.
"We've seen
some pretty hefty increases in rail fares in recent years. We now need to
see an increase in the quality of service on offer, rather than fat cat
executives pocketing big pay rises.
"I would like
to see Scotland's railways lead Europe on this issue - it will help reduce
road traffic and we could also promote more cycling holidays around the
country."
Note - The
European Parliament meeting in Strasbourg is voting on a legislative
resolution on a European regulation regarding International rail passenger
rights and obligations. Amendment 69 tabled by Mr Hudghton's parliamentary
group would require train operators to improve facilities, it reads:
"Article 4a
Baby carriages, wheelchairs, bicycles and sports equipment
All trains,
including cross-border and high-speed trains, shall provide a specially
designated area enabling passengers to bring on to the train baby
carriages, wheelchairs, bicycles and sports equipment." |
