MEPs from the
Scottish National Party and Plaid Cymru will unveil a poster highlighting
their opposition to replacing the UK's Trident nuclear weapons programme.
They will be available for interview and questions afterwards.
This coincides with a debate at the European Parliament in Strasbourg on
nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. On the same day, MPs at
Westminster will be voting on replacing the UK's Trident nuclear weapons
programme, and a major public protest is anticipated in London.
Jill Evans (Plaid Cymru MEP and Chair of CND Cymru, who was arrested in a
protest recently at the Faslane Trident Submarine base) said:
"As thousands protest in London, we are here to reaffirm our commitment to
nuclear disarmament and our opposition to these illegal and immoral
weapons of mass destruction. Nuclear weapons make the world a more
dangerous place. They will not protect us from global warming or terrorist
attacks."
Ian Hudghton (SNP) said:
"In Scotland alone, scrapping Trident would free up substantial funding to
invest in public services. It makes no sense to waste this money on these
weapons of mass destruction."
Note - Capital costs alone put the cost to the taxpayer of replacing
Trident at 25 billion pounds, whilst running costs could see this figure
rise to more than seventy five billion pounds. |
