"Parliament Must Recognise Scotland National Team"
SNP President
Ian Hudghton MEP has called on MEPs of all parties to vote in favour of
giving recognition to the continued existence of Scottish football's
independence. The call comes ahead of a key debate in the European
Parliament on the future of European football. At an earlier stage in the
parliament, MEPs narrowly rejected a provision which gave recognition to
the fact that the UK has four national football teams. The debate is
scheduled to take place in Brussels tonight [Wednesday] - precisely when
the Scotland team will be taking on World Cup champions Italy. Mr
Hudghton has re-submitted his proposals before the whole Parliament - and
is hoping that on Thursday morning Scotland fans will be celebrating two
important victories.
Speaking
ahead of the debate, Mr Hudghton said:
"The UK is
unique in Europe in currently being a single member state - but having
four national football teams. Scotland and England are the two oldest
national teams in the world and it is vital that the EU gives recognition
to our continued footballing independence.
"In an
earlier vote, MEPs narrowly voted against a proposal which would have
given recognition to our special status. I am now bringing the issue
before a meeting of the full parliament - and expect to get a result.
"On Wednesday
night, Scottish eyes will all be on how the team is doing in Italy.
Meanwhile, however, another football battle will be taking place in
Brussels.
"The European
Parliament must recognise Scottish football's independence. I'll be taking
the game to them - an am confident that come Thursday morning the Tartan
Army will have two reasons to celebrate". |
