SNP President
Ian Hudghton MEP has today [Saturday] welcomed a week in which Scotland's
Government has taken an active role on the European stage. Mr Hudghton
joined First Minister Alex Salmond in Brussels this week during
discussions with European Commissioners and civil servants. It was a week
in which the First Minister outlined his ideas for a proactive and
joined-up approach from the Scottish Government which will have Scotland's
wider interests at heart.
Speaking
today, Mr Hudghton said:
"The recent
discussions between First Minister Alex Salmond and the European
Commission have been very productive indeed. Scotland's case for active
involvement on the European stage is strong, and I was pleased by the
positive meetings which were held.
“It is vital
that rather than being poorly represented by Westminster, we take our
rightful place at the negotiating table - for instance, by leading the
negotiations in Fisheries Council.
"I am very
hopeful that after our constructive dialogue this week in Brussels,
Scotland's Government will in future play a proactive role in Europe.
"I will
continue to push forward Scotland's interests in the European Parliament
and I am pleased to be working with a Scottish Government committed to a
mature and far-sighted approach on behalf of the people of Scotland." |
