SNP MEPs
Ian Hudghton
and Alyn
Smith are backing moves to review the current restrictions
on the quantity of liquids passengers are allowed to carry on board
aircraft in the EU.
Both MEPs
voted in favour of a resolution at the European Parliament in Strasbourg
which asks the European Commission to review the restrictions and ensure
they're proportionate to any risk. The vote was carried by 464 in favour,
158 against and 70 abstentions.
The
restrictions were introduced in September 2006 following the alleged plot
to blow up transatlantic flights the previous month using liquid
explosives. Since then passengers are only permitted to carry on board
aircraft liquid in containers up to 100ml which must be placed in a
transparent re-sealable bag and inspected at airport security.
Speaking
after the vote in Strasbourg,
Ian Hudghton
- a member of the Parliament's Transport Committee - said:
"We need restrictions that are realistic and in proportion
to any potential threat. We all take the need to guard against terrorist
threats very seriously but our response has to be proportionate and
justified.
"There is cross party concern that the current restrictions
imposed by the European Commission are disproportionately costly and
disruptive. We would like to see the situation reviewed, and if these
restrictions are to continue, then the Commission needs to clearly justify
why they're needed." |
