SNP MEP Ian Hudghton, President of the Scottish
National Party, has welcomed a call by the Scottish Fishermen's Federation
(SFF) for Scotland to take the lead role in fisheries negotiations with
the EU. The SFF made the call as they met with the new UK Fisheries
Minister Jonathan Shaw in London today (Monday).
Commenting Mr Hudghton said:
"I welcome the support of the SFF in calling for
Scotland to take the lead role in fisheries negotiations.
"Over the years, successive UK governments have failed
to stand up for the interests of our coastal communities in the crucial
annual talks which lead to the all-important quota setting Council of
Ministers each December.
"Scotland has taken the pain of compulsory scrapping of
vessels, limited days at sea, and drastic quota cuts. Now is the time for
some equality of status for what remains of our fleet.
"It is simply logical, and fair, for the Scots
fisheries minister to have the opportunity to lead for the UK considering
that up to 70% of the UK's fishing industry is based in Scotland. From now
on our vital interests should be given the priority they deserve in EU
negotiations.
"There is nothing in EU regulation which prevents
Scotland from leading the talks. It is entirely up to the UK government to
decide which minister leads in Europe.
"I call upon the UK Government to accept the logic of
the argument, and say yes to the appeal from the SFF today." |
