Ian Hudghton (Verts/ALE
),
I supported amendments in the name of the Verts/ALE Group which sought to
adopt guidelines on fair competition, social standards and environmental
protection for tramp vessel services. These amendments also called for
special account to be taken of the specific situation of small and
medium-sized ship owners.
Unfortunately these amendments
were defeated. The resulting report overall goes against proposals by the
Commission aimed at breaking down cartels in maritime transport. Therefore
I voted against the final report because I believe that in many respects
the Commission’s original proposal was better suited to lowering maritime
transport costs, without endangering the reliability of services. |
